Diode-pumped composite ceramic Nd:YAG planar waveguide amplifier with 327 mJ output at 100 Hz repetition rate

We present a diode-pumped high-energy ceramic Nd:YAG planar waveguide that is demonstrated as a record in output energy for the ceramic planar waveguide fabricated by nonaqueous tape casting and solid-state reactive sintering. Under a repetition rate of 100 Hz and a pulse width of 250 μs, a maximum output pulse energy of 327 mJ is obtained with a beam quality factor of =2.6×7.0. The corresponding ...
Efficiency-enhanced picosecond mid-infrared optical parametric downconversion based on a cascaded optical superlattice

We demonstrate an efficiency-enhanced picosecond (ps) mid-infrared radiation via optical parametric downconversion. Based on a cascaded periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal (MgO:sPPLT), a tandem optical parametric oscillation-optical parametric amplification (OPO-OPA) process is achieved. Compared with a single OPO process, the conversion efficiency obtains an enha...
Vortices formation induced by femtosecond laser filamentation in a cloud chamber filled with air and helium

We report on the experimental observation of the airflow motion induced by an 800 nm, 1 kHz femtosecond filament in a cloud chamber filled with air and helium. It is found that vortex pairs with opposite rotation directions always form both below and above the filaments. We do not observe that the vortices clearly formed above the filament in air just because of the formation of smaller particles ...
Effect of time bin size on accuracy of streak tube imaging lidar

Streak tube imaging lidar (STIL) is an active imaging system that has a high range accuracy with the use of a pulsed laser transmitter and streak tube receiver to produce 3D range images. This work investigates the effect of the time bin size on the range accuracy of STIL systems based on the peak detection algorithm. The numerical simulation indicates that the time bin size has a significant effe...

COL Cover Story: YAG/Nd:YAG/YAG ceramic planar waveguide laser amplifier with 327-mJ output at 100-Hz repetition rate [16/05/2016]

Electro-optical efficiency is an important parameter for all-solid-state lasers. With higher efficiency, construction of laser devices can achieve miniaturization and reduce weight more easily. As a laser gain medium, a planar wave...
COL Cover Story: Cascaded optical super lattice helps raise mid-infrared laser output [13/04/2016]

Ultrafast laser radiation with picosecond (ps) duration in the 2–5 μm mid-infrared region plays a key role in many fields including material processing, time-domain spectroscopy, and biomedical applications. An optical parametri...
COL Cover Story: Vortice formation induced by laser filamentation in gas [05/04/2016]

Intense femtosecond lasers can achieve self-guided transmission over a long distance in the Earth’s atmosphere, which provides a more environmentally friendly alternative to current technologies for local weather control and rainma...
COL Cover Story:A range accuracy of 3 mm obtained in STIL system [19/02/2016]

Streak tube imaging lidar (STIL) has attracted considerable attention in recent years because of its high range accuracy, high sensitivity, and wide field-of-view (FOV). This technique has been widely applied for target identificat...
COL Cover Story: The laser performs aerial ballet — Rotary disk laser with optically driven maglev motion [28/12/2015]

The thermal load accumulated in the gain medium induces thermal lensing which results in thermal aberration to the laser cavity, which would degrade the performance of solid state lasers. When the gain medium is rotated, the heat a...
COL Cover Story: Optical design for Antarctic Bright Star Survey Telescope [11/12/2015]

Dome A, the summit of Antarctic Plateau, has been supposed to be one of the most inaccessible parts of the continent where the elevation height is 4091 m, and the average temperature of the year is about -56 ℃. In January 2005, the C...
